Joseph Webb, Ph.D. is a motivational speaker, educator, consultant, trainer, and coach. Over the past decade, Dr. Webb has presented at numerous colleges/universities throughout the country. He provides a POWERFUL & PASSIONATE program that helps students understand the importance of leadership, academic success, and overcoming adversity. Knowing the smell of failure and experiencing the taste of success, his motivational presentation helps students understand that failure is not fatal, and success is not final.
Growing up in group homes and foster care, Dr. Webb went from an environment where learning was not valued at all to one where it was the highest priority. As an accomplished Higher Education Administrator whose passion is to help students succeed, Dr. Webb has developed a program titled "Walking Both Sides of the Street: The Road to College Success". This presentation is an autobiography that focuses on his life having grown up moving from one foster home to another as a youth, he often walked on the wrong side of the street in search of any form of friendship or attention he could find. He lacked personal guidance, integrity, spirituality, and the luxury of a consistent family. Growing up as a ward of the court, he did not realize the decisions he was making as a youth would come back to haunt me later down the road as an adult. Thanks to someone who believed in him more than he believed in himself, he was encouraged to consider walking down a path he never imagined...College!
Dr. Webb realized early in his college experience that it did not matter he grew up in foster care, he had no family, no money, no support. What he realized is that he now has the same opportunity as every student around him – the opportunity to obtain a college degree. What separates him from his peers is the decisions that he makes. It was at this moment he made the decision to utilize all campus resources, sit in the first three rows in class, meet with faculty during office hours, and devote the time and effort needed to achieve academic success. Dr. Webb realized academic support services are not for students who are necessarily struggling, but for students who want to achieve the highest level of academic success.
Dr. Webb provides a powerful, interactive, and motivational presentation that will help students understand their true potential and maximize resources and opportunities that are available. This presentation incorporates the strength-based approach of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) to help students identify the best of “what is” to envision a future of the best of “what can be”.

Commencement speaker shares life lessons to inspire Graduates
“I have known firsthand the smell of failure, and have experienced the taste of success,” Webb said. “I believe that the success of life is determined by where you end, not where you start. It is this philosophy that inspires me to work closely with and transform the lives of today’s students.”
Webb told UW-Eau Claire graduates that true success can be obtained through persistence and dedication.
“You have to respect your standards and level of satisfaction in order to truly feel the benefits of success,” he said. “You have to have the stamina to get up again and again.”
He also advised graduates that
“the road to success is typically not straight.”
“You will encounter a curve called Failure; a loop called Confusion; speed bumps called Friends, Co-workers, and/or Family; red lights called School Loans; caution lights called Relationships; and you may experience a few flats along the way,” Webb said.
“But, through all this, you also have a spare tire called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, an Emergency Kit to accept assistance from others, and a driver, which is you. With hard work, passion and dedication, you too will make it to the other side of the street, the street that leads to the road of success.”
"I wanted to tell you that I have interpreted every ceremony at UWEC for 28 years and you were the first speaker that has ever received a standing ovation! ☺ That completely speaks to you and your journey". Rachel Kohn, UW Eau Claire
